Description
Spain Ferreras, Juan de General History of Spain. Translated from the Spanish by Jean de Ferreras, enriched with historical and critical notes, intaglio vignettes, and geographical maps. By M. D’Hermilly. 10 volumes. With an engraved frontispiece by Cazes, engraved by Fessard; 10 (8 folded) maps by Robert, engraved by Lattré; and numerous vignettes and borders. Paris, Bordelet et al., 1751. Small 4°. Marbled, dark brown full leather bindings of the period with rich gilt lettering and gilt labels. A decorative copy of the first modern, source-critical historical work on Spain. Ferreras was the first historian to radically weed out popular Spanish founding myths, fictional accounts of saints and forged chronicles. Instead, he relied strictly on verifiable medieval documents, treaties and coins. His account spans from the very earliest beginnings of the Iberian Peninsula up to the year 1589. The French translator, Vaquette d’Hermilly, not only translated the text but also enriched it with extensive critical and historical footnotes. He cross-referenced Ferreras’s Spanish perspective with French and German sources, making the work a true European comparative standard reference work. - The decorative, engraved historical maps depict Spain, Naples, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and others. - A fine, clean copy.
