Haller, Albrecht von
Fundamentals of the Physiology of the Human Body. Translated from the Latin by J.S. Haller. 7 volumes (of 8, excluding vol. 4). With a frontispiece portrait and 5 folded copperplate engravings. Berlin, Voss, 1759–1776. Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt lettering and gilt labels (somewhat rubbed and bumped).
First German edition of this landmark work in modern physiology. – Blake 195 – Eales I, 1415 – Lundsgaard 286 – Haller redefined physiology as ‘Anatomia animata’. He separated the study of vital functions from the mere description of structures and elevated physiology to a core medical discipline in its own right. Haller replaced philosophical speculation with the systematic, comparative and experimental method. He provided precise descriptions of the circulatory system, the autonomous mechanics of the heart, the respiratory mechanism and the digestive process. The work remained the authoritative standard reference for medical practitioners for generations. - Art Nouveau bookplate from the Leipzig City Library, circa 1900, on the inside cover; title page bearing the stamp ‘Bibliothek vom Schloss Püchau’ of the Counts of Hohenthal (lawfully removed in 2006 during the restitution auction). - Occasionally slightly browned or somewhat stained; overall a good copy.
