Description
Maritime Affairs Tonello, Gaspare A Dictionary of the Main Nautical Terms. With an explanation of each term, as well as analogous or corresponding terms in Italian, French, English and German. With 2 folded copperplate maps, containing 48 illustrations. Venice, G.(iovanni) B.(attista) Merlo, 1835. First and only offprint of the multilingual nautical dictionary. – Not listed in Jahn, F., Bibliography of the Imperial and Royal Navy. – Pomba, G., ed., Catalogue of Giuseppe Pomba’s Bookshop, 1852, p. 88. – Cantù, I. *L’Italia scientifica contemporanea*, 1844, p. 48. – Extremely rare on the market and in institutional collections; we have found no evidence of it at auctions. - Gaspare Tonello (1797–1849), Professor of Naval Architecture at the Austrian Academy of Nautical Sciences in Trieste, authored, amongst other works, a treatise on navigation (1827) and the comprehensive *Lezione intorno alla marina*, which was published in four volumes by Alvisopoli in Venice between 1829 and 1832. The final volume of the latter work contained a polyglot nautical dictionary, the first and only offprint of which, published three years later, is presented here. - In his preface, the author cites the dictionaries by Röding, Neuman, Romme and Lescallier as sources for his compilation. The dictionary comprises some 500 entries in Italian, with their French, English and German equivalents, as well as explanatory notes. - The copperplate engravings feature detailed illustrations of various ship structures and components. - The half-title page is missing. The spine has a tear in the upper section, leading to a tear at the joint before the second section; the binding is slightly rubbed; some pages have slight foxing; the loose plates included with the volume have small tears in the margins in places and are browned; plate no. II is trimmed at the lower left edge, resulting in a small loss of print. Overall, a sound copy of this extremely rare work, complete with the boldly and clearly engraved plates. Shipping. – With 2 folding copper-engraved plates (loosely attached) depicting 48 detailed illustrations. - For references, see above. - The first and only separate edition of this multilingual dictionary of nautical terms, particularly rare in both the trade and academic circles.
