Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Bugatti Type 57 3.3-litre 1934 Gouache on card 31 x 49.5 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: “The Type 57 was met with a degree of scepticism by the brand’s die-hard enthusiasts, who criticised it for being too ‘civilised’. It was undeniably more comfortable and easier to handle than its predecessors, but its power and top speed of 150 km/h were, in 1934, highly respectable, even for a 3.3-litre eight-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts producing 130 CV. The chassis, which was extremely rigid, was 100 per cent Bugatti with its tubular front axle and rear suspension featuring inverted semi-cantilever arms, but the gearbox – synchronised on the higher gears – was integrated with the engine. Over the years, the Type 57 evolved further; it was fitted with hydraulic brakes, hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers and an engine mounted on rubber blocks. Bugatti offered some consolation to its critics with the high-performance versions of the 57, with or without a supercharger, which remain amongst the most prestigious sports cars of all time.’ Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 173.
