Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Frazer-Nash 1934 Gouache on card 43 x 33 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘A tubular front axle supported by quarter-elliptical leaf springs with struts, an engine that could be an Anzani, Meadows, Blackburn or Cough, and a unique transmission system comprising chains and toothed sprockets with dog-clutch engagement – such were the characteristics of the Frazer-Nash. With no differential and its rear wheels rigidly coupled, it turned ‘side-by-side’ and offered considerable resistance in tight bends taken at low speed on a good road surface. The Frazer-Nash with chain drive had a very favourable power-to-weight ratio; it was robust and durable, although the finish left something to be desired in certain details. During the 1920s and 1930s, Frazer-Nash cars achieved remarkable results in track and road races. Its manufacturers, the Aldington brothers, adopted the BMW as an additional model in 1935; although demand for the BMW (later known in England as the Frazer-Nash-BMW) exceeded that for the chain-driven cars, the latter continued to be built until 1939.’ Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 169.
