Description
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Maybach Zeppelin 60/200 1936 Gouache on card 30 x 50 cm (signs of damp, mould and soiling) Notes: ‘This large twelve-cylinder car was truly a luxury vehicle. It was named after the famous airship manufacturer because Maybach had originally started out making aircraft engines. The cylinder block, forming a 60-degree open V, was made of aluminium cast in a single piece with the upper part of the sump. The cast-iron cylinder head featured overhead valves operated by rocker arms. Two carburettors provided the fuel supply; the ignition was dual-circuit; and the crankshaft, supported by seven bearings, was fitted with a vibration damper. The displacement was 7,977 ems and the power output 200 CV. at 2,800 rpm. The transmission comprised a single-plate clutch and a three-speed gearbox, which was unusual in that it was supplemented by two final-drive ratios controlled by vacuum via two small levers mounted on the steering column. The Maybach thus had six forward gears and two reverse gears. The drive shaft was housed within a push rod tube. This enormous vehicle, with a wheelbase of 365 cm, reached a top speed of 160 km/h. Several Maybach chassis, fitted with special, highly streamlined bodywork, were exhibited at the Berlin and Paris Motor Shows.’ Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Editions, 1965, our gouache reproduced on p. 189.
