Marseille – Oriental Art & Paintings
From Bordeaux to Marseille, the South-West and the Mediterranean coast have always been gateways to the East. A port open to the world, Bordeaux has, since the 19th century, harboured its own fascination with the East, embodied by figures such as Pierre Loti, who built his house-cum-art collection in Rochefort, reflecting his travels. In Toulouse, it was Benjamin-Constant, one of the masters of Orientalist painting, who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts before setting off for Morocco. Ziem, who settled in Martigues, brought back the light of Constantinople and Venice. Marseille, for its part, has embraced Baya as one of its own: a major retrospective at the Cantini Museum as early as 1982, then at the Vieille Charité in 2023 and again at the Cantini in 2025 — a continuous link between the city and the work of the Algerian artist.
