Unveiled in 1969 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Maserati Indy is part of the great tradition of sports coupés from the Trident brand. Designed by the coachbuilder Vignale, it owes its name to Maserati’s famous victories at the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940. Produced until 1975, offering a rare combination of sportiness and comfort with four full-size seats, this 4.9 America version is one of the most sought-after variants of the Indy. Powered by a 4.9-litre V8 engine producing around 300 chevaux, mated to a five-speed ZF manual gearbox, it delivers remarkable performance whilst retaining exceptional driving pleasure. Fitted with power steering and air conditioning, it perfectly embodies the Italian grand touring spirit of the 1970s.
This example, presented in an elegant Silver Grey paintwork with a black leather interior, was acquired in 2014 at an Artcurial auction. The bodywork was generally sound despite a few signs of wear, whilst the leather interior had just been fully restored.
During its mechanical assessment, a problem with the timing system was identified, with a chain spacer found to have fallen into the engine sump. In light of the growing interest in this model, a complete restoration was then undertaken to preserve this Maserati in a condition befitting its status.
The work, carried out over a period of approximately two years, covered all mechanical components: a complete overhaul of the engine, gearbox, air conditioning, electrical system and fuel tanks. Since this work was carried out, the engine has covered only around 1,200 miles.
The bodywork has also undergone a thorough restoration: it was completely stripped down, the components treated, and the preparation and painting carried out using traditional methods in five stages, each spaced several weeks apart. All seals have been replaced and the stainless-steel bumpers were made to measure.
Presented today in ‘concours’ condition, this Maserati Indy 4.9 America features its original alloy wheels, new tyres, tinted electric windows, a period-style radio with an electric aerial, and a fully restored black leather interior. The wooden steering wheel and gear knob have also been refinished.
The car has ‘Matching Numbers’, certified by Maserati Classiche, and will be accompanied by a comprehensive file containing invoices totalling approximately 50,000 euros, as well as photographic records of the mechanical and bodywork restoration work.
