1948 Chrysler Town & Country Convertible **

Chassis: 7407321
Type C39N
8.2-litre Cadillac V8 engine
Registration documents pending
The New Yorker range shared its technical and structural basis with the Royal, Windsor and Saratoga models. Positioned in a higher segment, the model was priced in 1946 from $1,825 to $2,725, justifying the addition of two specific body styles: a two-door, six-seater ‘all-steel’ convertible, and a Town and Country-style open-top variant, complementing the saloon version already available. This convertible is based on the short-wheelbase chassis of 308 cm, whilst the saloons used a 354 cm platform. The lacquered woodwork consists of ash for the light sections and Honduran mahogany for the dark panels.
This example has been part of the same collection for many years. It has undergone a major mechanical modification with the fitting of an 8.2-litre (500 cu in) Cadillac V8 engine mated to its automatic gearbox. The powertrain is operational and the gear ratios engage; however, the fuel tank is damaged and will need to be replaced before any use.
The vehicle has undergone a stabilised restoration. The electro-hydraulic soft top is operational and its covering is intact, as are the chrome fittings and the bespoke imitation alligator leather upholstery. Apart from the powertrain, the main modification from the original configuration concerns the dashboard instrumentation, which has been replaced by aviation-inspired dials. This Chrysler Town and Country represents a milestone in American automotive design of the immediate post-war period.
This 1946 Chrysler New Yorker Town and Country convertible stands out for its bodywork combining steel with ash and mahogany wood panelling. Long-held by a single owner, this example has been fitted with an 8.2-litre Cadillac V8 engine and automatic transmission for ease of use.
