In 1960, a new model arrived: the 40 series. The "BJ40" models adopted a less industrial design. It drew inspiration from both the Willys Jeep and the Land Rover. The model designation was retained. The "B" models were fitted with 3-litre 4-cylinder diesel engines producing 80 hp (BJ40). As for the number following the 4, it denotes the chassis length, ranging from very short (40) to very long (46), the latter capable of accommodating up to eight passengers thanks to two rear side benches.
The Toyota shown here is a 1979 BJ40 with a short chassis. This model is fitted with the 3.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine, introduced by the manufacturer in 1974, as well as a front-mounted winch. This example was purchased new by a member of the Beckers family, then a Toyota dealer in Maaseik, Belgium, who remained the owner until 2014.
The vehicle joined its current owner’s collection in 2021, during which time it has seen little use. A recent test drive of around thirty kilometres confirmed that everything is in good working order, with no notable faults. The odometer reads approximately 37,000 km. This figure is consistent with the presence of a service sticker dating from 1995, which at the time showed 26,740 km. Unusually for this type of vehicle, the MOT certificate is completely clear. The vehicle’s well-preserved overall condition reflects its original state, consistent with its usage history.
This Toyota Land Cruiser model, renowned for its mechanical robustness, represents a milestone in the history of off-road vehicles from this era and will appeal to enthusiasts of the brand.
