A stunning aluminium Type C - rare, fast, and beautifully built.
A stunning aluminium Type C - rare, fast, and beautifully built.
Famous for its many victories, the C-Type is undoubtedly one of the most famous British cars thanks to its victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951 and 1953. Thanks to a number of technical advances, including 4-wheel disc brakes, the C-Type driven by Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt at the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours became the first car in history to exceed an average speed of 160 km/h.
Of the 53 examples produced, a large number were entered into competition by the factory or private teams, dominating the contemporary competition consisting of Ferrari, Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz. Unsurprisingly, given its beauty, speed and pedigree, the C-Type was widely copied by tuners such as Lynx and Porteus. For the latter, of the 240 examples produced, only around forty were fitted with an all-aluminium body.
Our all-aluminium example is therefore one of the rarest and most sought-after on the market for its finesse and build quality. Based on a MKII 3.8, it retains its 210 bhp engine and 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. Purchased in July 2006 in England from Adrian Hamilton (Duncan Hamilton & co Ltd), it carries the colours of the famous Ecurie Ecosse founded by David Murray in 1952.
Its current owner has taken part in numerous Goodwood Revivals, driving to the event from Biarritz without incident. Maintained on a regular basis by recognised specialists such as Accel Moteurs in Pau (a former Cosworth mechanic) and The Workshop (Pierre Modas) in Biarritz, its handling, ease of use and reliability are beyond question.
Accompanied by an extensive file containing all the invoices from the outset and a photo file of its construction, this Jaguar C-Type is a fascinating machine, easy to handle and yet capable of extraordinary performance for its time. A must-see, for a fraction of the price of a real one!
