"A mythical WLA restored to a civilian version by the painter François Bruère".
From the start of the Second World War, the American government ordered motorbikes from Harley and Indian that met precise specifications, with 4-speed gearboxes, cardan drives and air filters adapted to extreme conditions.
More than 90,000 WLAs (for Army) were produced during the war, and production of the WLC (civilian) continued for several more years.
Many military Harleys, salvaged or sold via surplus when reformed, enjoyed a second, quieter civilian life, when they were not modified and transformed into choppers.
The motorbike that illustrates these pages was rebuilt and restored by François Bruere, a painter specialising in motorbikes and cars, and official painter of the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Please note, beyond its civilian look, that its serial number is in fact a block foundry number, since neither the engine nor the frame are stamped.
