At the end of the 1960s, Sir William Lyons was faced with the problem of inefficiency. His range included no less than three luxury saloons: the Mk2, the 420 and the S-Type. The idea was to combine these three ideas into a single model, which would ultimately lead to considerable savings!
The solution was found in 1968 with the presentation of the XJ6. The lines were sleek, elegant and low-slung (it's striking to see these cars alongside their modern-day equivalents), and the 6-cylinder engine used to power them was nothing short of mythical, being the 4.2-litre unit also seen in the E-Types.
Our example was delivered new to France by Brossel, and is one of the rarest and most sought-after Series 1s (here in its first phase). The current owner, an avid collector of Jaguar saloons, acquired the car in 2007. At the time, the car was reputed to be second-hand, and its condition seems to bear this out!
This XJ6 is literally an example of an intelligent restoration: from the engine, rebuilt in 2024 (10,000 km since then, with running-in completed!), to the gearbox-axle assembly, via the fuel tanks and the cooling system, everything has been done in recent years! The paintwork was redone in 2000, and the interior remains as original as ever. A number of improvements have also been made, including electronic ignition, a modern alternator and H4 headlamps on the front lights.
