Description
1968 - Citroën DS 21 M Cabriolet Chassis no. 4494044 Italian registration A French masterpiece: the DS cabriolet. At the launch of the DS convertible, the press was full of praise, with Le Figaro headlining "A shock novelty: a convertible with particularly pure lines" and Paris-Presse adding: "A feast for the eyes". Paris-Presse added: "A feast for the eyes". Incorporating all the technical innovations of the saloon, no European convertible was to match the beauty and comfort of the DS for several years, aided by the superiority of Citroën's hydropneumatic suspension, which was ahead of its time. In all, 1,365 factory-built cabriolets were built on the basis of the DS 19 and DS 21 between 1960 and 1971. The DS 21 cabriolet shown here was launched in France in 1968 and is fitted with the original mechanical gearbox. It was registered 279 QZ 27 when, 11 years later, it left France for Italy, where it was bought by a music engineer who used it in the summer and rarely drove it. He moved to the USA and unfortunately couldn't export his car there, so he decided to sell it in Milan, 19 years later. The second Italian owner bought the DS for his daughter and also used it very little, sharing a garage full of sports cars from 1997 to 2006. The car was restored to a very sound condition in the early 2000s. The current owner bought it in 2006, when its odometer showed around 150,000 original km. A huge amount of work was carried out on the mechanics so that the car could be driven with peace of mind over long distances. Between 2023 and 2024, a great deal of work was carried out, including replacement of the clutch, timing chain, engine mounts, braking and hydraulic systems, steering box, etc. All on invoices, which can be seen in the file. It also has a Citroën certificate of authenticity. Today, this exceptional DS is in extraordinary condition and, above all, it runs flawlessly. As our test drive will illustrate, driving a DS cabriolet on a summer's evening is always an unforgettable experience.
