Description
1975 - Mercedes-Benz 280 SL (R107) Chassis no. WDB10704212000987 French registration One of the very few R107s to leave the factory in Cayenne Orange! In 1971, the new Mercedes SL R107 series replaced the famous "Pagoda". Fatter and more opulent than their predecessor, they also featured a wider choice of engines. Initially, they were powered by a 3.5-litre V8, which was later available in 3.8-litre, 4.2-litre and 5-litre versions. From 1974 onwards, to meet the demands of a clientele prey to oil-related issues, Mercedes offered the car with a modern 2.8-litre 6-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts, which enabled it to develop 185 bhp in its carburetted version. Inside, the 107 Coupés and Convertibles display the care and attention that the marque usually gives to its models, with advanced soundproofing, an easy-to-read dashboard, comprehensive equipment and comfortable seats. Our example, which rolled off the production line in September 1975, was one of the first 1,000 280 SL R107s built (out of a total of more than 25,000 units); according to its factory data sheet (a copy of which is attached), it was produced in the extremely rare Cayenne Orange colour, with a black MB-Tex interior. It arrived in France (Corsica to be precise) in 2006, and was repainted grey at an unknown date. Since then, it has been regularly serviced (brakes, front axle, suspension), and although its underpinnings show traces of corrosion, it is in good general condition and is just waiting to be driven, having covered just over 3,000 km since 2010!
