Description
1960 - Peugeot 403 Cabriolet
Chassis no.: 2430922
French collector's registration document
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Peugeot 403 cabriolet for sale. It has a clear history with all the owners listed since it left the factory. Restored at no extra cost with numerous original parts (in excess of €100,000!) by a genuine enthusiast of the model to reproduce "044 APD", the car owned by Peter Falk, alias the famous Inspector Columbo.
A perfectly documented, matching numbers example. It left the factory on 17 March 1960 in its original colour of Gris Métallisé VA 607, with original bodywork no. 1630 and original engine no. 1451. Only the original "coq de roche" red upholstery has been replaced by "light sand" coloured leather upholstery, in keeping with the colour chart of the time and identical in every respect to that of Columbo!
Since its restoration, the car has always been perfectly maintained. The mechanics have been thoroughly overhauled, with replacement of the timing chain and radiator, the fuel tank and fuel system, and a host of other work, always taking care to replace what is necessary with new original parts from stock (glass rear lights, rear-view mirrors, rare wheel trims, Marchal accessories, door sills, restored car radio, chrome and special details, etc.).
Immediately prior to the sale, a full service was carried out at La Maison du Cylindres, along with a complete overhaul of the brakes. Note that the badge in the centre of the steering wheel was replaced by a new original one after our photo session.
The most desirable version of the 403, only 2,050 Peugeot cabriolets were produced between 1957 and 1961. It is now estimated that around 400 survived, making this model one of the rarest French grand touring cars of its era.
