A tribute to Jean Bugatti's Type 55, produced in just 82 examples, same owner since 2007.
Born into a family with a passion for cars, Xavier de la Chapelle forged a solid reputation for himself thanks to his talent and pugnacity. Thanks to his high-quality creations, he was able to establish his name as a reputable brand. His first car, an evocation of the Bugatti 55, was unveiled at the 1978 Geneva Motor Show. It took him three years to develop this substantial project. It was in Saint Chamond, in the Lyon region, that he created Automobiles Stimula-De la Chapelle, reviving a brand with which he had family ties.
The Type 55 roadster is an alchemy of modernity and classicism. The feat consists in offering, under the curves of an old Bugatti, a high-performance, reliable machine that in no way detracts from the unique sensations of a real roadster. Riveted to the road, the car exudes a flavour of yesteryear, reminiscent of Bugatti's masterpieces.
The Type 55 is powered by a BMW engine, mounted on a beam chassis and surrounded by a fibreglass body. The engine is the famous 2.5-litre in-line 6-cylinder. Power output varies according to the customer's choice, who can also opt for an engine preparation from the famous Hartge, Alpina or Schnitzer. Power is transmitted to the rear axle via a 5-speed gearbox.
The suspension provides effective roadholding, and the car's speed is tempered by four ventilated disc brakes. The vehicle is already highly customisable, with the option of creating a 'made-to-measure car'. The materials used are of the highest quality and have been carefully selected. Each car is unique, because it is made to order and assembled by hand.
Our Type 55 was launched on 1 February 1990. It is chassis no. 54 out of a total of 82 examples. Third-hand, its current owner acquired it in 2007, when its odometer read just 13,750 km. Since then, it has been pampered and has taken part in many of the club's outings across Europe. Kept in very good condition, it now has 54,600 km on the clock. Its red and black bodywork is in perfect harmony with its deliciously distressed red leather upholstery. Complete with a host of accessories, this fine example is sure to delight enthusiasts looking for a unique driving experience!
