Description
1977 - Lola T492 Ford 2.0
Chassis n° HU 81
Unregistered competition vehicle
An easy and very efficient racer, typical of the seventies.
The Lola T492 was derived from the famous T490, which had already dominated the UK Sports 2000 championship in the late 1970s. It was destined to extend the British manufacturer's dominance in Europe as well as in the United States.
High-performance yet manageable for a seasoned amateur, the formula was adopted by other countries, and in 2 years the Huntingdon-based manufacturer was able to produce 91 Lola T492s: 46 for the United States, 30 for the United Kingdom, 11 for Holland, 7 for Sweden, and 1 each for France, Switzerland and Denmark.
Slightly different, the T492 retained the reliability and balance of the T490, but with two side radiators for improved cooling and track performance. Light and agile, it benefits from a rigid chassis, optimised suspension and efficient aerodynamics with no aerodynamic appendages.
The HU 81 chassis is powered by a 150bhp 2-litre Ford Pinto engine mated to a Hewland gearbox. Its simple but effective mechanics make it accessible for historic competition, while offering immediate driving pleasure with reasonable running costs.
Eligible for many championships, it is not uncommon to find T492s at Silverstone Classic, the 6 Hours of Spa, Espiritu Montjuïc and Jarama or during the Brands Sports 2000 or as part of the French Circuit Championship and many others.
