"In the same family until 2025, many recent expenses: ideal for rediscovering the strengths of the Amazon in its most sought after version.
Launched in the 1950s, the Volvo 122S - nicknamed the Amazon - marked its era with its refined style and assertive temperament. It shone on the roads and in rallies thanks as much to its responsive powertrain as to its well-balanced chassis, which offered an engaging drive to those who knew how to make the most of it.
Launched in 1956, the Volvo 120 Series was produced until 1970, by which time around half a million had been built. Its build quality, robustness and longevity helped establish the Swedish brand's worldwide reputation.
Marketed in Sweden under the name Amazon, it's the all-purpose Volvo. It is available as a saloon, coach or estate. The 122 S came out in 1958, and was equipped with the B18 engine with 1800 cm³ and 85 bhp from 1961. It was the sports car of the range. That same year, the Amazon was the first car in the world to be fitted with safety belts as standard.
Amazon cars shone in rallies, as did all Swedish cars of the period. It was seen on the stages of the Monte Carlo, the Acropolis Rally, the Swedish Rally and the RAC, and it scored some fine successes, including a European title in 1963 (shared with the PV544) with Gunnar Andersson at the wheel.
The car illustrated in these pages was owned by a single Parisian family until 2025, when it was purchased by its current owner. Although repainted in the 2000s (in its original colour), the car is in original condition, with less than 91,000 km on the clock, having benefited from a number of recent refurbishments (engine, clutch, brakes, radiator, etc.) after a long period of hibernation in a Paris basement garage.
