"The most advanced of Jeeps, ex-Claude Delagneau
After the Second World War, it was time for France, its army and its industry to rebuild. And while the surplus was full of Ford and Willys Jeeps, national pride prompted the government to entrust Delahaye, one of the most prestigious French makes, with the task of developing a French Jeep.
The Delta project was therefore initiated by the Delahaye teams and was tested by the French army in 1949. In 1951, the VLR (Véhicule Léger de Reconnaissance) went into production and was the army's official vehicle until 1954... when the company went bankrupt and left the production of military 4x4s to Hotchkiss.
It should be noted that Delahaye had created a Jeep with cutting-edge technology: synchronised 4-speed gearbox, independent torsion bar suspension, lockable differential, dry sump engine, numerous aluminium mechanical components... But it was precisely this sophistication that brought about its demise.
This rare VLR is in very good overall condition and offers a very interesting degree of authenticity. It was owned by the charismatic former president of the FFVE, Claude Delagneau, who had it restored to its current condition.
Rare, and more original than a Jeep Willys, the Delahaye VLR is an extremely interesting model from a historical and technical point of view. And much more affordable... To be continued!
