A Morgan is not a classic car like any other. A showcase of British craftsmanship that carries on the spirit of the original roadsters, these hand-built cars uphold a tradition: providing an authentic driving experience rooted in a philosophy that is both ascetic and epicurean.
Founded at the start of the 20th century, the Morgan brand first made its mark with its legendary three-wheelers (3-Wheelers) before launching, in 1936, its first car: the 4/4 (4 wheels, 4 cylinders), which became the ‘Plus 4’, fitted with a more powerful engine. Whilst post-war car production moved towards the ‘bonnetted’ design (with wings integrated into the bonnet and front grille), Morgan refused to follow the trend and retained a traditional style, inspired by the British sports cars of the 1930s. With its long bonnet, prominent grille, wraparound wings with integrated headlights, and a cabin positioned as close to the ground as possible – “sitting on the rear axle” – the Morgan quickly became a classic. And if this formula has always proved so appealing – with production soon to reach its centenary – it is also thanks to a fundamental quality that is often lost these days and which was dear to Colin Chapman (Lotus): lightness. By eschewing the superfluous, a Morgan Plus 4 weighs barely 800 kg.
First introduced in 1954, this Morgan model is a particularly sought-after transitional version. Fitted with the valiant 1,991 cm³ Triumph 4-cylinder engine, the lightweight Plus 4 offered astonishing acceleration and generous torque even at low revs. With precise front-end handling (the ‘Morgan’ sliding-sleeve front suspension) and the robust 4-speed Moss gearbox, driving with the wind in your hair and your elbow resting on the door offers a distillation of unique sensations.
Ivoire Troyes is delighted to offer this 1956 Morgan Plus 4 Roadster, bearing chassis number #3557. It joined its owner’s collection in 2017. Registered as a classic car, this Morgan features the hallmarks of a period restoration faithful to the original. With a uniform patina, the overall appearance is sound. However, on closer inspection, the navy blue paintwork reveals some signs of ageing, including micro-scratches, scratches and, in places, slight cracking (front wings, rear wings, sills). Like the bodywork, the underbody and chassis are in good condition, with no apparent signs of impact or corrosion.
The cabin features an original interior in generally good condition, highlighted by a Moto-Lita steering wheel with a wooden rim. The havana-coloured leather upholstery is well-preserved and the seats are in good condition, as is the dashboard. The odometer reads 00010 km: the odometer has probably been reset to zero since the car was purchased in 2017 at 99,780 km. To complete the presentation, the floor mats are included; these light-coloured mats were misplaced by the car’s meticulous owner, who did not want to get them dirty. The soft top and the black tonneau cover are in good condition, as are the steel wheels with chrome hubcaps.
The two-part bonnet allows access to the heart of the machine. The famous original Triumph engine bears the number #TS-12624-ME, consistent with the year 1956. The presence of a plaque from the renowned importer Jacques Savoye suggests that this car was probably sold new in France. The mechanical components are all present, but the car’s running condition could not be tested. Having been off the road for several years, it will need to be brought back to life before its driving experience can be enjoyed once more.
Hand-built using traditional methods, Morgans have always been rare and exclusive, with waiting times for a new car often running into years. Available immediately at an attractive price, this French-specification example features an elegant colour combination. Supported by a vibrant Morgan community and benefiting from good availability of parts, this is a connoisseur’s choice – the very essence of the passion for motoring.
