Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 1975, the Ferrari 308 marks a key milestone in the history of Maranello’s mid-engined V8 berlinettas. A spiritual successor to the Dino 246 GT and complementing the Bertone-designed Dino 308 GT4, it introduced a silhouette that would become one of the most iconic in Ferrari’s production line-up of the 1970s and 1980s.
In 1977, Ferrari expanded the range with the 308 GTS, the open-top version of the GTB. It featured a removable roof, allowing drivers to enjoy open-top driving whilst retaining the berlinetta’s lines and sporty character. This particularly attractive design played a major part in the GTS’s commercial success. For this new car, Ferrari called upon Pininfarina and the talent of Leonardo Fioravanti. Very compact, low-slung and tapered, the 308 adopted a wedge-shaped profile characteristic of its era. The retractable headlights, sculpted side air intakes, vertical rear window and four circular rear lights combine to create an instantly recognisable silhouette. The balance of its proportions would play a major part in the model’s success and would have a lasting influence on the design of the V8-engined Ferraris that followed.
Mounted transversely in a central rear position, its naturally aspirated 2,926 cm³ V8 engine is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox operated via the legendary Ferrari H-pattern gearselector. In its first generation, to which the example shown here belongs, the engine retains four carburettors.
The 308 GTS also achieved considerable fame amongst the general public thanks to the television series *Magnum*, in which Thomas Magnum, played by Tom Selleck, regularly got behind the wheel of a Ferrari 308 GTS. This on-screen presence helped to make its silhouette one of the most instantly recognisable Ferraris of its era.
The example we are offering for sale, built in 1979, bears the chassis number F106AS-28847. Of American origin, it currently has 61,390 miles on the odometer; this mileage is not guaranteed. The interior features an elegant combination of beige and black leather, complemented by beige carpets – a combination particularly characteristic of Ferraris from this period.
The car is in good overall condition. Of particular note are three small cracks in the paintwork on the bonnet. The car is offered without a service history.
