Description
RANGE ROVER V8, 3.5L, R 200 carburettor – Year 1980 (e.g. PARIS-DAKAR 1988) Date: 21/11/1980 Chassis number: LHABV2AA105913 Model: RR 200 Registration document: in order MOT: Requires re-test Condition: Roadworthy History: The Rover British Leyland Group needed to prove that its off-road vehicles were not merely rugged vehicles but also ‘rolling saloons’. As soon as the Range Rover was launched, enthusiasts of fine cars snapped up this extraordinary vehicle, which broke the mould of the rugged Land Rovers and Jeeps. Luxury is evident throughout, and the driving position is superior to that of 4x4s, which are uncomfortable, poorly insulated and impractical for everyday use. The Range Rover range was available in a petrol version with a V8 engine, which was powerful by 1970 standards. No car could compete with this saloon version, not even the American models, which, despite their powerful engines, felt like ships on the road. The so-called ‘classic’ models were produced until 1981 as two-door versions, later expanded to four-door variants with different wheelbases, including the Long Wheelbase (LWB) versions. The best advertisement for this luxurious off-road vehicle was the fact that the Queen of England acquired virtually every model and drove her cars herself. Condition: The Range Rover presented here is a 1980 V8 petrol two-seater estate version sold by Venant in Bourges to an off-road enthusiast. He wanted to take part in a famous race, the Paris-Algiers-Dakar, organised at the time by Thierry Sabine. To do so, this ‘civilised’ vehicle had to be transformed into a ‘sand fox’, and he turned to tuning specialists well-known at the time. ETT, based in the Paris region, was chosen to build a racing car that was both high-performing and robust. The brilliant Christian Engenspiller, a former racing driver who had become a tuner, stripped the car down and fitted it out with roll cages and track accessories, an anti-slosh fuel tank and rollover protection, African-spec suspension, a fibreglass roof, weight reduction, equipment for carrying spare parts, wheels and other components. The performance aspect was entrusted to Autorama 92, run by René Metge, a driver and winner of several Dakar rallies. The car became a competition machine built to win. It has competed in the Dakar Rally on several occasions and has suffered a host of human-induced setbacks, including a row between the driver and co-driver in Agadir that led to retirement. Since these modifications were made, it has never been altered in any way. It has been preserved in its African rally configuration. There are photos of the car at various stages of the rally, featuring its sponsors – some of whom are still in business today… Nevertheless, the authenticity of this beautiful car remains, perfectly preserved and in excellent rally-spec condition. However, the fact that its roadworthiness certificate is not up to date is due to interior modifications, amongst other things, including bucket seats and roll bars. It will need to obtain an FFSA ‘passport’ to allow it to continue on the road; furthermore, it is one of the cars eligible for the Classic Dakar.
