This car was designed by Audi for the WW group, which did not have any off-road vehicles of its own. The German army had small DKW cars, as did the French army in Germany, and wished to replace these vehicles with more robust and faster models than their predecessors. The 1,700 cm³ engine was borrowed from the VW Passat, which was slightly more powerful than the Golf and more rugged in terms of durability. This convertible car was seen on all fronts, replacing the French Jeep, and even in major off-road rallies such as the Dakar. The Canadian manufacturer Bombardier acquired the licence to produce the car in 1981, which enabled the models to be exported all over the world.
