Description
1972 Maserati Indy 4.9L America
Manufacturer: 1972 Maserati Indy 4.9L America
Vehicle registration document: French vehicle registration document
Chassis No.: Chassis No. AM116491600
- Only 300 units produced
- Air conditioning and power steering
- Recently restored mechanics and bodywork
This Maserati Indy is a rare and interesting 4.9L version, production of which was limited to 300 units. Finished in ‘Argento Auteuil’ with a black leather interior, it features the finest specifications of the era: air conditioning, power steering, electric tinted windows… The car on offer left the factory on 30 June 1972 and is one of the few units sold new in the USA (New York).
Its current owner acquired it at Le Mans Classic in 2014, at which point the upholstery had already been restored; as a discerning enthusiast, he had the engine and gearbox overhauled, the air conditioning fitted, the electrical system serviced and the fuel tanks cleaned by Dessonet garage. As for the bodywork, it was carefully stripped, treated and repainted, with five successive layers of paint each sanded down. All the body seals have been replaced and the stainless-steel bumpers have been custom-made. The wooden steering wheel and gear-knob have been re-varnished. Around €50,000 worth of work has been carried out, as documented in a photo portfolio. A modern car radio with a vintage look has been fitted, and the tyres have recently been replaced. The car has covered approximately 1,200 miles since its restoration and, as this is the most powerful version, with 320 cv, featuring the highest specification and an attractive colour scheme, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more desirable Indy.

This Maserati Indy is a rare and interesting 4.9-litre version, of which only 300 were produced. Finished in ‘Argento Auteuil’ with a black leather interior, it featured the best specification available at the time, including air conditioning, power steering and tinted electric windows. The car on offer was manufactured on 30 June 1972 and is one of the few examples sold new in the US (New York).
Its current owner purchased the car at Le Mans Classic in 2014; whilst the upholstery had already been restored, as a discerning enthusiast, he had the engine and gearbox rebuilt, the air-conditioning and electrical system overhauled, and the fuel tanks cleaned by Garage Dessonet. Meanwhile, the bodywork was stripped back to bare metal, treated and carefully repainted, with five coats applied and sanded down in succession. All the body seals were replaced and new stainless-steel bumpers were made to measure. The wooden steering wheel and gear knob were re-varnished. Some 50,000 euros were spent on the work, which can be seen in a collection of photographs. A modern retro-style radio has been fitted, and the tyres were recently replaced. Since its restoration, the car has covered around 1,200 miles; as the most powerful version, producing 320bhp, with the highest specification and in a striking colour combination, it will be hard to find a more desirable Indy.
