1981 – Alfa Romeo Petenella Leontina Gran Sport 2000 Chassis no. AP1044 Former Italian registration certificate Vehicle sold without an MOT ‘Pre-war charm, combined with the performance and reliability of modern engineering!’ The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Grand Sport is undoubtedly one of the most legendary and high-performance creations from the Arese-based manufacturer. Back in the 1970s, two Italian companies joined forces and embraced the neo-retro trend. One, Pettenella Automobili, was a classic car restoration firm based in San Leo; the other, Achilli Motors, was a luxury car dealership in Milan. From this partnership emerged the Pettenella Leontina Gran Sport, a tribute to the famous original 6C 1750 Gran Sport.   Whilst the bodywork and chassis are produced in the tradition of the 1930s, as faithful to the original as possible, the entire mechanical assembly is derived from 1970s production, featuring a 1750 or 2000 4-cylinder twin-cam engine, and modern running gear with disc brakes concealed beneath faux drum brakes to preserve the vintage aesthetic.   According to various sources, twenty cars were manufactured between 1973 and 1976, whilst when the company went into liquidation in 1976, there were still enough parts left to build six more cars.   The example featured on these pages is a Gran Sport 2,000 fitted with the 2-litre engine, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Its proportions are elegant, and a closer look reveals that Carrozzeria Petenella had restored authentic 1930s Alfa Romeos before embarking on this venture.   The car has recently been serviced, including the fitting of a new starter motor and tyres, and a complete brake overhaul.
