Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1958, this elegant open-top car, designed by the Italian coachbuilder Pietro Frua, was quickly well received. Production began in June 1959 and the first cars were delivered during the summer. Renault also sought to win over the American market: the Floride was unveiled there as early as January 1959, at the New York Auto Show, under the name ‘Caravelle’. However, it did not go on sale in the United States until a few months later, in the autumn. The Floride was based on the Dauphine’s powertrain, featuring an 845 cm³ four-cylinder engine derived from the Gordini specification. With modifications to the camshaft and intake system, this engine produced 40 ch and enabled the car to reach a top speed of around 125 km/h. With its elegant lines and character as a pleasure car, the Floride thus occupies a special place in Renault’s history in the late 1950s.
