The Bultaco adventure began with a disagreement. In the late 1950s, Francesc Xavier ‘Paco’ Bultó was at the helm of Montesa, one of the most prominent brands on the Spanish motorcycling scene. When the management decided to withdraw from competition, he strongly opposed the move: for him, racing was the best way to advance the development of the machines and build their reputation. He therefore walked out, followed by several of the company’s engineers, mechanics and riders. In 1958, he founded his own brand, Bultaco, in Sant Adrià de Besòs, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
The Model 41 was the 250 cc version of the Model 40. It was a high-performance and reliable motorbike that dominated numerous national championships and whose racing career continued in Spain due to the ban on importing Japanese motorbikes. Its handling was so exemplary that, in other countries, some riders went so far as to fit Japanese engines to the TSS chassis in order to achieve the stability and efficiency that the latter lacked.
The TSS Mod. 41 underwent several upgrades, notably new engine casings and, most importantly, a gear-driven primary transmission. It was fitted with an Amal 389 B-32 GP carburettor and electronic ignition, which boosted the 250 cc engine to 38.8 chevaux. In 1968, the best-known rider was Ginger Molloy: it was whilst riding the Mod. 41 that he demonstrated the full extent of the TSS’s power.
This particular example stands out for its truly remarkable condition: the mechanics are as good as new and the presentation is immaculate. Notably, it has retained its original Dunlop Racing tyres, reference numbers KR73/KR76, in sizes 2.75-18 at the front and 3.00/3.25-18 at the rear. Typical of competition machines from this ‘Triangulaire’ generation, these tyres contribute significantly to the bike’s authenticity and historical significance.
