Designed to win back purists, it played a major role in cementing the 911’s legendary status in the motoring world. This 911 Carrera Type G is in fact an evolution of the classic 911 and its predecessor, the SC, but it has nonetheless been significantly modernised, in keeping with Porsche’s philosophy that each generation must bring its own set of improvements. Aesthetically, the 3.2-litre Carrera remains very similar to the SC, with its characteristic Type G appearance, notably due to its famous bumper bellows. Only the front spoiler has been modified, and the Carrera logo is affixed to the rear bonnet, whilst a reflective rear strip bearing the word ‘Porsche’ in red between the rear lights makes its debut. Inside, the 911’s core features remain very much in evidence, with the ignition switch on the left, the instrument cluster in a straight line, the characteristic driving position and the off-centre pedals. A few comfort features, such as a heating control, have nevertheless been added. Mechanically, the flat-six boxer engine has been completely overhauled, increased to a displacement of 3.2 litres and fitted with Motronic electronic fuel injection, delivering 231 chevaux. As a result, the 911 3.2L is both more powerful and delivers more torque than its predecessor. It is also brought to a halt by four disc brakes without ABS, which live up to Porsche’s reputation in this area. The other major improvement came later in the 911 3.2L’s production run, with the introduction in 1987 of the G50 Getrag gearbox with hydraulic clutch release. By making gear changes easier, this allowed the 911 Carrera to take a significant step forward in terms of ease of use and driving pleasure. Even more reliable, high-performing and enjoyable to drive than its predecessors, the 911 Carrera 3.2L was a huge success. It was available as a coupé, Targa, cabriolet and even a Speedster. Produced until 1989, with 79,649 units built across all versions, it achieved its aim of winning back the hearts of the model’s die-hard fans. It is undoubtedly the ideal model for entering the world of classic sports cars. The Porsche 911 3.2L Carrera on offer is a great value ‘G50’ version, featuring the eponymous 5-speed gearbox, in the highly sought-after Targa body style. This is a car of German origin, first registered on 22 June 1987. As such, it is one of the 1,354 so-called ‘rest of the world’ examples of the 1987 911 3.2L Targa. This car features a specification highly prized by Porsche enthusiasts, as it is finished in the specific Schwarzmetallic 708 colour, the result of a special order (code L999), combined with an optional all-black leather interior and matching carpet. It is also currently fitted with distinctive 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels in brushed aluminium and black; please note that the original optional 16-inch ‘Téléphone’ wheels will also be supplied with the car. Furthermore, it comes with various options such as a more powerful battery, central locking, a rear windscreen wiper (removed but present), a passenger-side wing mirror and a heated front passenger seat, as well as air conditioning – a feature that is becoming increasingly essential for a comfortable driving experience. This fine example has had only a very limited number of owners. Indeed, imported into France in early 1994 by First Automobile, based in Strasbourg, it subsequently had just five owners, including a father and then his son before the last owner, who kept it from 2001 to 2026 – a period of over 25 years. They have clearly all taken good care of it, as evidenced by its service history and its excellent condition given the 195,000 km shown on the odometer; this figure corresponds approximately, give or take a few hundred, to its actual original mileage according to the available service history and Histovec report. As is common with these models, the odometer had in fact broken down last year and therefore had to be repaired, a process which has only just been completed. Recent work also includes a full service carried out by the Parisian specialist Miramond Dan Auto. They also replaced the exhaust silencer and fitted and balanced all four wheels, with brand-new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres mounted on brand-new ‘Fuchs’ replica rims. The Targa’s soft top has also just been refurbished by an upholsterer. Although it has never been restored but has always been well maintained, this 911 is therefore in very good condition, both in terms of its appearance – with a slight patina – and its performance, offering sound and pleasant handling. The MOT is less than six months old, so it is perfectly ready to hit the road. Another advantage worth highlighting is that, as this 911 has retained its original mechanical components and configuration, it is ‘Matching Numbers’ – a feature that is always reassuring and adds value. Finally, it comes with a comprehensive service history file, comprising numerous MOT certificates, an old valuation report and invoices, as well as its original service booklets, including the original service log, all in their protective sleeve. The tool kit, jack and spare set of keys are also included. This 911 3.2L Carrera G50 Targa is therefore a high-quality example, the sort of which has become increasingly difficult to find. A safe bet for collectors, it represents a reasonable and enjoyable investment for those wishing to own a piece of the 911 legend!
