Ben Pon, the brand's Dutch importer, was on the grounds of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg when a vehicle caught his eye. It was the work of VW workers who wanted to simplify the task of transporting heavy pallets. Ben Pon was inspired to design a new type of car with a steering wheel at the front, an engine at the rear and a box-shaped structure. Two years later, Heinrich Nordoff, CEO of Volkswagen, was won over by Ben Pon's idea. Pon's idea and had the first prototype built. It was at the 1950 Geneva Motor Show that the final version, named Type 2 (the Beetle being Type 1), was officially presented. The vehicle used the engine and axles of the Beetle and a self-supporting body. The engine had a displacement of 1,131 cm3 and a power output of 24 bhp at 3,300 rpm. It can carry up to eight people, and the two rows of rear seats can be quickly dismantled to allow loads to be transported. Series production began on 8 March, at a rate of ten cars a day. In 1954, the 100,000th Type 2 rolled off the Wolfsburg production line. Incredibly universal, the VW Combi already existed at the time in thirty different versions: bus, flatbed, van, etc. A factory in Hanover was now totally dedicated to it. By 1962, production had topped one million units. Over the years, the T1 has undergone a number of changes, but it still retains its original look, with a split windscreen.
