The model Its origins are closer to the Royal Navy than to the Tropezian jet set. What's more, it has had a chequered history, with production under several different brands and in the four corners of the world. The Mini Moke was born in response to a request from the British army for a light, parachuting military vehicle, comparable to the famous Willis Jeep. Its small wheels and low ground clearance made it unsuitable for off-road use by the army. In 1963, BMC developed a version designed for the civilian market. The 850cc 4-cylinder engine was the same as the one used in Mini cars, and the general design of the car meant that it could be marketed at an attractive price and maintained at a lower cost. In the UK, the Mini Moke was not as successful as expected, mainly because it was difficult to use an open car with spartan comfort in a country with a humid climate. Although the Moke was produced in the UK until 1968 under the Austin and Morris brands, it was subsequently relocated to Australia and Portugal between 1983 and 1993. Of the 49,937 examples 14,518 Mini Mokes were produced between 1964 and 1968 at the BMC factory in Longbridge. In 1990, Italian motorbike manufacturer Cagiva bought the rights and the Ventas Novas plant in Portugal from BMC to continue production of the Moke, although only 2,071 units were produced between 1991 and July 1992 under the name "Cagiva Moke".
