CLARKTOR SMALL TRAIN AND ITS 3 CARRIAGES 1946 – History: In the aftermath of the Second World War, the American firm Clark Equipment Company, based in Battle Creek, Michigan, developed a wide range of industrial tractors marketed under the name Clarktor. Designed for factories, military bases, airports and logistics sites, these vehicles were renowned for their exceptional robustness, mechanical simplicity and remarkable traction capacity. The CT40 model was one of the most widely used versions in this range. Fitted with a four-cylinder petrol engine and a particularly robust mechanical transmission, it was widely used by the US and allied armed forces, as well as in numerous industrial facilities. From the 1970s onwards, many decommissioned Clarktors were converted into small road trains for use at campsites, leisure parks, private estates or tourist attractions. Their particularly sturdy chassis provides an excellent base for a bodywork design reminiscent of a steam locomotive. Description: The example on display is based on a Clarktor CT40 first brought into service on 15 July 1946. The documents in the file allow us to trace a particularly interesting part of its history. The vehicle comes with an interesting historical dossier attesting to its military origins. An official certificate from the Belgian State Property Office confirms that it served with the Belgian Air Force (23rd Wing at Zellik) before being decommissioned and then sold at public auction in December 1979. This documented provenance lends this Clarktor genuine historical and collectable value. The conversion into a road locomotive faithfully replicates the aesthetic features of steam locomotives: dummy boiler, chimney, steam dome, driver’s cab, rear platform designed for hauling passenger carriages, green livery with yellow stripes. The Clark Equipment Company manufacturer’s plate is still present on the dashboard, as are the main original mechanical components.
