Description
MATRA MURENA 1981 – History:
Unveiled at the 1980 Paris Motor Show, the Talbot-Matra Murena succeeded the Bagheera, adopting its original three-seater layout whilst addressing its main flaw: corrosion. Developed and assembled by Matra Automobile in Romorantin, the Murena features a fully hot-dip galvanised chassis – a world first for a mass-produced car – as well as a body made from composite materials offering excellent resistance to the effects of weathering.
Thanks to its rear mid-engine layout and particularly well-balanced weight distribution, the Murena boasts excellent handling characteristics. Its modern design by Antonis Volanis, with its taut lines and pop-up headlights, makes it one of the most original French sports cars of the early 1980s.
The 2.2 version was the most powerful in the range prior to the introduction of the extremely rare Murena S. It is powered by a robust 2,155 cm³ four-cylinder engine producing 118 ch, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, delivering first-class performance whilst maintaining excellent driving comfort.
Today, the Murena has become a sought-after model due to its originality, advanced technology and limited production run.
Description:
The example shown here is a Talbot-Matra Murena 2.2 first registered on 30 June 1981.
It comes with a file containing, amongst other things, the Belgian registration certificate, an old Belgian roadworthiness certificate and several maintenance invoices.
The chassis number X5551BX606797 matches perfectly between the Matra manufacturer’s plate, the cold-stamped marking on the bodywork and the administrative documents.
The front compartment is well preserved. It retains its spare wheel, brake booster, master cylinder, wiring harnesses and numerous original manufacturer’s labels. Some traces of superficial corrosion are visible on certain mechanical components (brake booster, bolts and steering cross-member), although no structural corrosion of concern is visible on the parts examined.
The interior appears incomplete. The dashboard, controls and main fittings are present. The door panels are missing. Plexiglass windows have been fitted. An additional panel featuring several switches has been fitted beneath the dashboard to control electrical accessories. No headlining
The engine compartment appears to be complete.
This Murena provides an excellent basis for a return to running order or a conservation restoration. Please note that the vehicle is no longer in its original condition: it has been lowered, does not have its original wheel rims, a spoiler has been added, the wing mirrors have been modified and the steering wheel has been altered.
