Description
MERCEDES-BENZ 280S W116 1977 – History:
Unveiled in 1972, the Mercedes-Benz W116 S-Class was the first generation to officially bear the name ‘S-Class’ (Sonderklasse). Succeeding the W108/W109 saloons, it set a new benchmark in safety, comfort and build quality, establishing the standards for large luxury saloons for decades to come.
The 280 S, introduced at the launch of the range, was powered by the renowned M110 engine, a 2,746 cm³ inline six-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts. Powered by two carburettors, this engine produces 156 ch and is characterised by its smoothness, robustness and excellent driving pleasure.
The W116 was also the first production saloon to feature numerous innovations in passive safety, notably a reinforced safety cell, a crumple zone steering column, an impact-protected fuel tank and, from 1978 onwards on certain versions, the very first ABS system developed in collaboration with Bosch.
Produced until 1980 with over 470,000 units built across all engine variants, the W116 remains today an essential benchmark amongst the great classic Mercedes models thanks to its exceptional build quality, remarkable comfort and mechanical reliability.
Description:
The car on offer is a Mercedes-Benz 280 S W116, first registered on 10 June 1977.
The vehicle is finished in an elegant metallic brown, paired with a beige and brown chequered fabric interior – a typical configuration for Mercedes models of this period.
The bodywork appears complete and uniform. The various body panels, chrome bumpers, lights and trim strips all appear to be present. The bodywork requires a complete restoration.
The interior appears particularly well-preserved for a vehicle of this age. The front seats and rear bench seat retain their original fabric upholstery, which has developed a lovely patina with no major visible tears. The door trims, headrests and main interior fittings are all present. A few dismantled parts and accessories are stored on the rear bench seat.
The engine compartment retains a very consistent appearance. It is fitted with its original M110 engine, complete with its air box, Bosch ignition system, carburettors and all its main accessories. No significant modifications have been observed.
The manufacturer’s plates, the stamped chassis number and the various documents accompanying the vehicle are consistent and match.
As no inspection of the underbody has been carried out, the structural condition of the floor panels, side members, sills and lifting points remains to be checked.
