Description
1986 JAGUAR XJS V12 HE – History:
Unveiled in 1975, the Jaguar XJ-S succeeded the legendary E-Type with a design philosophy firmly rooted in Grand Tourisme. Designed under the direction of Malcolm Sayer, it prioritised comfort, long-distance driving and mechanical smoothness over the sporty character of its predecessor. Its elegant 5.3-litre V12 engine, already tried and tested in the E-Type Series III, enabled it to deliver first-class performance whilst maintaining a remarkable level of refinement.
Produced until 1996, the XJ-S went on to become one of Jaguar’s iconic models, with over 115,000 units manufactured. Early models, such as the one presented here, are now highly sought after by collectors for their original styling and authenticity.
Description:
The car shown here is a Jaguar XJ-S V12 5.3 first registered on 9 April 1986.
This car is in a condition requiring a complete restoration. The bodywork is severely damaged by extensive perforating corrosion, with serious damage to the windscreen surround, rain gutters, bonnet reinforcements, engine bay and several panels. The metallic red paintwork is badly deteriorated and the entire vehicle shows signs of having been in storage for a very long time.
The engine bay appears to be complete and retains its 5,343 cm³ Jaguar V12 engine as well as its main peripheral components. However, the whole unit is heavily rusted, with widespread corrosion affecting the pipework, fixings, fittings and mechanical components. No functional checks have been carried out and the engine has not been started.
The interior appears to be complete. The beige leather upholstery is in good condition, with an even patina consistent with the vehicle’s age. The main dashboard instruments appear to be present. However, the wood trim is badly damaged and will need to be replaced or restored. The headlining has come away completely and will also require repair.
The vehicle is accompanied by its Belgian registration certificate, a previous roadworthiness certificate, its certificate of conformity and several period administrative documents. The chassis numbers recorded on the vehicle match those shown on the documents.
Given the extent of the visible perforating corrosion and the vehicle’s overall condition, this example should be regarded primarily as a source of spare parts or, for a particularly committed professional, as the basis for an extremely extensive restoration, the cost of which will far exceed the value of the restored vehicle.
