Description
VOLVO PV444 1956 – History:
Unveiled in 1944, the Volvo PV444 marked a major turning point in the Swedish manufacturer’s history. Inspired by the styling of post-war American saloons whilst retaining Volvo’s trademark robustness, it was the brand’s first truly mass-market model. Its commercial success played a major part in Volvo’s international expansion and in establishing its reputation as a manufacturer of reliable and durable cars.
The PV444 was fitted with a robust 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine coupled with a three-speed manual gearbox (later upgraded to four speeds depending on the version), offering modest performance but remarkable durability. Produced until 1958 before being superseded by the PV544, it remains today one of the most popular classic Volvos amongst enthusiasts of Scandinavian cars.
Description:
The example shown here is a Volvo PV444 first registered on 4 May 1956.
The bodywork is in good overall condition and appears to be particularly complete. The black paintwork is original and has developed a lovely patina, with a few scratches, minor chips and signs of wear consistent with the vehicle’s age and its long period of storage. The chrome trim, mouldings, headlights and hubcaps are all present and present a uniform appearance despite slight surface oxidation. The alignment of the doors and windows appears satisfactory. The underbody shows surface corrosion on several mechanical components, notably the exhaust system and the running gear. Traces of corrosion are also visible on the lower parts of the doors and the sills, with holes in places. There is significant corrosion on the front right wing. Overall, the car provides a particularly sound and authentic basis for restoration.
The interior has retained its authenticity, with well-preserved period upholstery, trim and instrumentation. The whole has a consistent patina, with no notable modifications.
The engine bay is clean, complete and true to the original, with mechanical components showing a slight patina of wear.
