ROLLS-ROYCE 20HP BOAT TAIL TOURER 1923 – History: Unveiled in the autumn of 1922, the Rolls-Royce 20 HP succeeded the legendary 40/50 HP ‘Silver Ghost’ as a model aimed at customers seeking a more compact and economical car, whilst maintaining the standards of quality, quiet operation and reliability that had built Rolls-Royce’s reputation. Developed under the direction of Henry Royce, the 20 HP was fitted with a 3,127 cm³ inline six-cylinder engine producing approximately 20 fiscal horsepower. As was customary at Rolls-Royce, only the running gear was produced at the Derby factory before being entrusted to the most prestigious British coachbuilders, including Barker, Park Ward, Hooper, Mulliner and Windovers, resulting in a range of very different cars. Produced between 1922 and 1929 in a run of 2,940 units, the 20 HP is now regarded as one of the most enjoyable pre-war Rolls-Royces to drive, prized for its smoothness, robustness and build quality. Description: This 1923 Rolls-Royce 20 HP ‘Boat Tail’ Tourer, chassis no. 89K6, is accompanied by an original factory archive file. The date of this bodywork is not recorded in the file. The documents include inspection and test reports for the vehicle’s main mechanical and electrical components, notably the engine, chassis, gearbox, pistons, carburettor, alternator, ignition system, the electrical equipment, the dashboard, the shock absorbers, the crankshaft, as well as various bodywork and sheet metal components. The records specifically mention engine no. G600 and various part numbers for original components. Taken together, this constitutes a particularly comprehensive set of original documentation that is rarely preserved, representing a real asset for the study, restoration or historical appreciation of the vehicle.
