Description
1969 FORD XL GT CONVERTIBLE – History:
Introduced for the 1969 model year, the Ford XL GT Convertible represented the pinnacle of Ford’s range of large convertibles. Derived from the Galaxie platform, the XL series stood out for its more luxurious styling and more extensive equipment than the standard versions, whilst offering particularly powerful V8 engines.
Available with a range of engines, including the famous Ford FE-series V8s and the new 429 cubic inch engines, the XL GT combined the performance of late 1960s American full-size cars with the comfort of a spacious four-seater convertible. Its spacious interior, optional automatic gearbox and high-quality fittings made it a true high-end touring car designed for the North American market.
Produced for a short period before the Ford Full-Size range was updated in the early 1970s, the XL GT Convertible is now a relatively rare model, particularly prized by enthusiasts of large American convertibles.
Description:
The vehicle on offer is a 1969 Ford XL GT Convertible.
The vehicle has just been taken out of storage and requires a complete restoration.
The bodywork is in very poor condition. It shows numerous areas of perforating corrosion, affecting both the body panels and the chassis. The sills, wheel arches, floor panels and several structural areas are severely affected. The paintwork is badly deteriorated, with numerous scratches, blisters, cracks and old touch-ups. The soft top is severely damaged.
The interior, however, appears to be remarkably complete. The seats, rear bench, door panels, centre console, dashboard, instrument cluster and the majority of the model-specific equipment are all still present. However, the interior is very soiled following a long period of inactivity and will require restoration. The upholstery has several tears, the headlining has come away completely and some trim requires repair.
The engine compartment could not be inspected. As the bonnet release cable was broken, it was impossible to access the engine. The engine currently fitted to the vehicle could therefore not be identified or checked. Although the vehicle bears several ‘429’ insignia, it is not possible to confirm the presence of this engine.
The manufacturer’s plate is present but covered by an old layer of paint. The number 9B62F187109 remains legible, however. No cold-stamped chassis number could be found during our inspection, a situation that is relatively common on certain American cars of this era. The number does not correspond to a Ford XL GT Convertible chassis number.
The vehicle is being sold without registration documents.
