Description
1929 FORD PHAETON – History:
The Ford Model A was launched at the end of 1927 as the successor to the famous Model T. It represented a major step forward for Ford, featuring a more modern design, a conventional three-speed gearbox, mechanical brakes on all four wheels and a particularly wide range of body styles.
Among these, the Phaeton was the open-top family version of the Model A. Featuring four doors, two rows of seats and a folding soft top, it retained the traditional layout of open-top passenger cars whilst benefiting from the Model A’s modern engineering.
The Model A is powered by a robust 200.5 ci (approximately 3.3 litres) inline four-cylinder side-valve engine, producing approximately 40 ch in its original configuration. Coupled with a three-speed manual gearbox, this engine would play a major part in the model’s success and its reputation for mechanical simplicity.
Description:
This Ford Model A Phaeton is offered in its as-found condition following a long period of storage.
The bodywork retains its original appearance, in a dark red colour scheme with black mudguards and running boards, combined with yellow-painted metal-spoked wheels. The car is fitted with a black soft top and retains its open, four-door configuration.
The car as a whole shows significant general patina, including dust, signs of wear, scratches, paint defects and various areas of rust. The mudguards, running boards and bodywork elements have an original finish and show various signs of ageing and damage due to storage conditions.
The engine compartment retains its 200.5 ci (approximately 3.3 litres) Ford four-cylinder side-valve engine, along with numerous ancillary components.
The engine number is A1297224, corresponding to a 1929 production year.
The underbody retains its original layout with a separate chassis, rigid axle, leaf springs and manual gearbox. The various components show widespread rusting due to age and storage conditions. Part of the exhaust system has come loose and is hanging beneath the vehicle.
This particular example is notable for being right-hand drive, a configuration still found on many cars intended for the European market in the late 1920s. The car may originate from Belgium, judging by the old plaque from Établissements Félix Spirlet S.A. in Verviers-Hervé, which is still attached to the vehicle. This feature provides an interesting insight into its history, although it does not allow us to establish with certainty where it was first delivered.
Despite the mechanical and cosmetic work required, its desirable four-door open-top body, its degree of completeness, its original mechanical components still in place and its particularly authentic appearance make this Ford Model A an interesting candidate for either being brought back into running order whilst preserving its patina, or for a more comprehensive restoration.
