IFA F8 TWO-DOOR SALOON – History: Produced from 1949 to 1955, the IFA F8 was one of the first cars manufactured in East Germany after the Second World War. However, its design predates the war, as it was directly derived from the DKW F8, launched by Auto Union in 1939 and produced until 1942. After the war, the former Audi factory in Zwickau, located in the Soviet occupation zone, gradually resumed operations. The F8 reappeared under the name DKW-IFA F8, before mass production of the IFA F8 began in 1949. It retained most of the design of the pre-war DKW. The F8 was notable in particular for its front-wheel drive – a solution already employed by DKW since the 1930s – as well as its 692 cm³ water-cooled two-stroke twin-cylinder engine, producing around 20 ch, coupled with a three-speed manual gearbox. Its top speed was around 85 km/h. Available in several body styles, including a two-door saloon, estate and convertible, the F8 retained a construction typical of its era, notably featuring a wooden frame for part of the bodywork. Despite the introduction of technically more modern models such as the IFA F9, the F8 remained in the catalogue until 1955. Around 26,000 units were produced during the IFA era, before the model was replaced by the AWZ P70. Several parts of the wooden frame are visibly damaged, or even disintegrated, particularly around the doors, the pillars, the roof and the side panels. The bodywork also shows significant corrosion, with various perforations and deformations. Straps have been fitted around the bodywork to hold certain components in place. The fabric-covered roof is in a very poor state of repair and has numerous areas where the fabric has come away and tears. The trim and seals also need to be replaced. The bumpers, wheel trims, trim strips, headlights and several original accessories are still present. The front retains its distinctive large vertical grille bearing the IFA monogram. An external spare wheel is also fitted at the rear. The dashboard retains its analogue instrument cluster and the gear selector mounted on the dashboard. The odometer reads approximately 33,833 km, a figure which is naturally not guaranteed given the condition and age of the vehicle. The engine compartment appears to be relatively complete. It houses the IFA/DKW two-stroke twin-cylinder engine, its cooling system, the radiator, the fuel tank, various electrical components and an old battery.
