Description
Mathurin MEHEUT (1882–1958)
‘Horsemen of the Far East’
Watercolour, gouache and pencil, signed with a monogram in the lower right-hand corner and dated 1914
30.5 x 23 cm (image area)
(As is: sun-faded, with small foxing spots)
In 1914, Méheut travelled to Japan on a scholarship awarded by the Albert Kahn Foundation. Convinced that an understanding of cultures, ways of life and ways of thinking across the world could help inform France’s decisions and promote international peace, Albert Kahn reserved these grants primarily for promising young teachers. Méheut, however, was the only painter to receive this prestigious grant.
His plan was to spend around eighteen months in Japan. However, the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 disrupted his plans and forced him to cut short his trip and return to France immediately.
