BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or Bavarian Motor Manufacture founded in 1916, whose emblem represents a propeller in motion on a background of the Bavarian colours blue and white and the three initials BMW. Under the terms of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, Germany was no longer allowed to build aircraft engines. Bavarian engineers therefore decided to adapt their engines to power boats, lorries and tractors. Then they turned their attention to two-wheelers, a popular means of transport in the post-war period. BMW's first motorbike engine took the form of a 500 cm3 block with two opposed cylinders, initially offered to two-wheeler manufacturers.
At the end of the Second World War, the Soviets vandalised the factories and seized BMW's technology. The Munich site was virtually destroyed, but the factories at Allach and Eisenach enabled industrial activity to continue. The company had to convert to the production of bicycles (Artovelo) and electrical household appliances. The Münich and Allach factories were dismantled by the Americans. Production did not really restart until 1947 with the R24 motorbike. It wasn't until 1952 that car production resumed through nationalisation, with models that paled in comparison to the BMW R50.
