A BRONZE 'TORTOISE' WATER DROPPER AND A GILT-BRONZE 'PHOENIX' WATER DROPPER
Six Dynasties Period and Ming Dynasty
One bronze water dropper naturalistically cast in the form of a tortoise resting on all four legs with its head forward, the top of the domed carapace with an short tubular aperture; the gilt-bronze water dropper with the globular body supported on three legs, a phoenix-head forming the spout opposite a loop handle terminating in a bovine head.
11 cm (4 3/8 in.) long and 7.5 cm (3 in.) long (3).
Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Louis Lemcovici (1910-2010), thence by descent in the family.

Compare this bronze tortoise water dropper with a very similar example, dated to the Six Dynasties period, illustrated in J.J. Lally, Chinese Art from the Scholar's Studio, March 13 - April 11, New York 2015, cat. no. 29. A very similar bronze tortoise-form water dropper, with an ear-cup held in the mouth of the tortoise, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bronze Articles for Daily Use, Shanghai, 2007, p. 160, no. 138.
