41. RARE ASSIETTE EN PORCELAINE DE LA FAMILLE ROSE Dynastie Qing, époque Yongzheng, datée de l'année 1728 A RARE FAMILLE ROSE ARMORIAL 'V.O.C.' DISH Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng period, dated 1728 Painted in bright pink and yellow enamels of the famille rose palette with a central crowned coat of arms supported by two crowned lions rampant, above a V.O.C. monogram framed by scrollwork, the border inscribed in pink enamels CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT.1728 (sic) (small things grow great in unity). 23.4 cm (9 1/4 in.) diam. (2). Provenance: Acquired in London in the early 1990s. A distinguished Dutch collection. 清雍正 1728年粉彩荷蘭東印度公司紋章圖盤來源於1990年代初得自倫敦荷蘭顯赫收藏 The arms and motto on this rare dish are those of the Dutch Republic, and the letters V.O.C. are the cypher of the 'Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie', the Dutch East India Company, the design was probably copied from a silver coin issued by the V.O.C in 1728, with the striped band at the border imitating the ribbed milling of the coin. In 1726 the Dutch East India Company arranged - without prior governmental approval - to have coins minted with a special inscription for trading use in the Far East. However, official permission was not granted until 1728 for the minting of special ducatoons that were minted with the company V.O.C. cypher. Several vessels including other dishes, cups and saucers and teapots in museum and private collections suggest that they belonged to a tea service commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to commemorate the successful launch of its new coinage and may possibly have been used by its employee at the Company's different official bases throughout the Far East, see Clare Le Corbeiller, China Trade Porcelain: Patterns of Exchange, New York, 1974, p. 104, no. 43. Very few examples from this distinctive service have appeared on the market. Compare, for instance, a teapot and a teabowl, sold in Christie's, New York, 26 January 2010, lots 13 and 14, and a similarly sized dish from the collection of Ann and Gordon Getty, sold in Christie's New York, 19 October 2023, lot 134.
