STATUETTE REPRÉSENTANT UN GARÇON JOUANT AU CHINLONE EN BRONZE Birmanie, XIXe siècle A BRONZE FIGURE OF A BOY PLAYING CHINLONE Burma, 19th century 13 cm (5 1/8 in.) high The boy balances on his left foot, clad in a girded loincloth (longyi) that leaves his limbs unencumbered and agile. His exposed arms and legs display the traditional tattoos for which the Burmese are renowned. A ball fashioned from interwoven strips of rattan rests lightly on his right foot. Chinlone, the Burmese national sport is traditionally played during Buddhist festivals and ceremonies. It serves both as a tribute to the Buddha, similar to offering flowers or music, and as a joyful gathering that strengthens community bonds. The game involves keeping the ball continuously in the air using only the foot, knee or shoulder, the use of hands is prohibited. Players pass it on from one to the other, showing dexterity, balance, and team spirit.
