UTSUBO (CARQUOIS) AVEC SEPT FLÈCHES Japon, période Edo (1615-1868), XVIIIe/XIXe siècle The utsubo of typical form, lacquered black and decorated with two chrysanthemum family crests, with leather harness and woven rattan tsurumaki (bowstring holder), the arrows all with bamboo shafts and feather fletchings, fitted with a variety of steel points. Utsubo 99cm (39 in.) long; the arrows 97cm (38 1/8 in.) the longest (8). Arrows such as these might have been used for hunting or kyūdō (formal archery), as well as in actual combat.
