As noted by the art historian M. Kasimati and the Director of the Teriade museum K. Maniatopoulos: "This is an autonomous composition, the subject of which is taken from the painter's favourite theme of Hellenism's heroic era of the 1821 uprising. The unspecified fighter is depicted according to well-known iconographic models of the War of Independence, which, as is known, Theofilos drew from common reproductions available at the time. His subjects from Hellenism's heroic era constitute a central point of reference for the artist who is acclaimed for exalting the humble and ephemeral, while infusing the rather feeble originals with an inner pulse, and reconstructing the compositional structure in accordance to the particular characteristics of his artistic vision [pronounced external and internal contours, close attention to detail, solid and impenetrable pictorial surface. In terms of both subject and style, the work is akin to Athanasios Diakos, 1930, 123.5x70cm in the collection of the Teriade Museum. In particular, taking into account his accumulated experience as the director of the Teriade Museum and familiarity with the style of Theofilos's works, and also in his capacity as an artist, Kostas Maniatopoulos provides the following towards attributing or not the painting to the specific artist.
A. The inscription of a title text and the rendering of certain letters.
B. Design and colour traits.
C. Technique: The technique, regarding the choice of line thickness, colour scheme, and overall style and aesthetic perception of the artist's formal and expressive means, is not only closely similar but almost completely identical to the technique used by Theofilos in his paintings.
Specifically: The white fustanella kilt along with the velvet touches on the vest, fez and leggings, the decorative braids, as well as the ornamentation of the vest, leggings, and sword sheath are found in several works by Theofilos in terms of both design and colour choices. The rendering of the eyes is akin to the technique used by the artist of the paintings Panagis Koutalianos, King of India, and Ancient flower seller. The same holds for the rendering of the hair in the works Theodoros Karapatis and Constantinos Palaiologos. The use of blue colour in the contour of the figure outlined against the sky in Panagis Koutalianos. The additional shading around the lower limbs in The Dancing Bear and Ancient flower seller. Likewise, the rendering of the limbs. Overall, in the opinion of Kostas Maniatopoulos, the rendering of certain individual elements alludes to Theofilos's works created during the period of his acquaintance with Teriade. According to the experts' opinion, all of the above are potential stylistic and formal traits of Theofilos Hadjimichail (Lesvos 1870-1934)."
