FRIEDRICH PRELLER L'ANCIEN (1804–1878) "Vigna Barberini, Orti Salustiani, Roma" Crayon sur papier, signé et annoté en bas à droite "F. Preller" avec indication manuscrite du lieu. H. 10,9 cm × L. 23 cm. Vers 1827–1831. Esquisse réalisée à Rome durant le séjour formateur de Preller en Italie, dans le cadre de son Grand Tour. Cette vue combinant ruines antiques, architecture, figures humaines et végétation aux abords de la colline du Palatin, à proximité des anciens Horti Sallustiani, témoigne de la précision de son trait et de son style romantique-classique dans sa pleine maturité naissante. Peintre et dessinateur allemand formé à Weimar et Munich, Friedrich Preller l'Ancien est l'un des représentants majeurs du romantisme paysager germanophone du XIXe siècle. Son séjour romain, décisif dans sa formation, influencera durablement l'ensemble de son œuvre — en particulier ses célèbres fresques mythologiques inspirées de l'Odyssée, considérées comme son chef-d'œuvre. Circa 1827–1831. A sketch executed in Rome during Preller's formative Italian sojourn as part of his Grand Tour. This view combining antique ruins, architecture, human figures and vegetation near the Palatine Hill, in the vicinity of the ancient Horti Sallustiani, reflects the precision of his line and his romantic-classical style in its earliest maturity. A German painter and draughtsman trained in Weimar and Munich, Friedrich Preller the Elder is one of the leading figures of nineteenth-century Germanic landscape Romanticism. His Roman sojourn, decisive in his artistic formation, would lastingly shape the entirety of his work — most notably his celebrated mythological frescoes inspired by the Odyssey, widely regarded as his masterpiece.
