John Lewis RICARDO (1812-1862) homme politique et entrepreneur anglais, neveu de David Ricardo. L.A.S., Lowndes Sq. 19 février 1848 ; 2 pages et demie in-8 ; en anglais. Au sujet d’un livre paru contre son ouvrage Anatomy of the Navigation Laws (1847) intitulé Ricardo’s Anatomy of the navigation laws, dissected (1848) by a Barrister, qu’on pense être John Bernard Byles. Il ironise à ce sujet : « I congratulate you on the number of guns that they are shooting at me. Whatever may be the nature of the charge with which they are loaded – the Anatomy must be the copper cap to make them go off. If this blunderbuss be no more deadly than the popgun of Mr Brown […] it will not terrify me ». Le titre sonne mal : The Anatomy dissected. Il pense que Lord John a donné dans le budget une dose difficile à avaler sans faire la grimace ; 5 % d’impôt est une mesure forte pour un gouvernement faible : « Lord John has given you a dose in the budget which you and yours wont swallow without a wry face. Five per cent income tax to buy cannon and gunpowder is a strong measure for a weak government ».
