(dont front., titre et préface), 504-(18) p., (3)-161-(9) pp. Veau fauve de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs, pièce de titre havane, caissons ornés (reliure frottée, papier oxydé, quelques cernes clairs). Beau frontispice allégorique gravé. Meilleure édition du célèbre ouvrage du médecin et chimiste allemand Johan Joachim Becher (1635-1682), pionnier de l’élaboration d’une théorie scientifique en chimie. Celle-ci reposant sur la doctrine des 3 éléments, ou “trois terres”, à savoir la terre vitrifiable, l'élément terreux ; mercurielle, l'élément métallique et inflammable, l'élément combustible. Édition donnée par le disciple de Becher, Georg Ernst Stahl, elle comprend, à la suite, les 3 suppléments, en pagination continue et avec un titre propre et un index. Puis, en pagination séparée, l’ouvrage de Stahl : Specimen Beccherianum sistens fundamenta, documenta, experimenta, quibus principia mixtionis subterraneæ… "An important work, which contains Becher's theory of matter, later adopted by his pupil Stahl, and therefore the basis of the phlogiston theory (...) Numerous editions of this work were published, the last in 1738… the first supplement (...) is a defence of alchemy against Werner Rolfinck (...) an opponent of this art" (Duveen). (Neville) Cette doctrine des trois terres prépara la révolution scientifique que Stahl allait accomplir. Becher, qui admettait en outre l'existence d'un acide universel des eaux et sels, principe du croisement des minéraux, est aussi le dernier chimiste connu qui ait professé la croyance en la transmutation des métaux.
